Understanding SATs: Year 2 and 6
As a parent, you may have heard about SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) in England, but understanding what they are and their significance can be vital in supporting your child’s educational journey. At Davis School Education, we believe in keeping parents informed, so let’s explore what SATs are and what they mean for your child.
What Are SATs?
SATs, or Standard Assessment Tests, are a series of standardised assessments carried out in English primary schools. They are designed to evaluate a child’s educational progress and attainment in key areas of the curriculum. In England, SATs are typically administered in two key stages:
Year 2 SATs (Key Stage 1)
- Year 2 SATs are taken by pupils in their final year of Key Stage 1 (usually aged 6-7).
- They include assessments in English and Maths.
- These SATs are often less formal, focusing on teacher assessment and classroom-based observations.
Year 6 SATs (Key Stage 2)
- Year 6 SATs are taken by pupils in their final year of Key Stage 2 (usually aged 10-11).
- They include assessments in English (Reading and Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar), Maths, and Science.
- Year 6 SATs are more formal, with external exam papers administered and marked externally.
Why Are SATs Important?
SATs serve several essential purposes:
- Assessment: They provide a snapshot of your child’s academic performance at specific stages of their education, helping teachers and schools identify areas of strength and areas that may need additional support.
- Accountability: SATs results are used to assess school performance and ensure schools are meeting national curriculum standards. This helps maintain educational quality and accountability.
- Secondary School Placement: In Year 6, SATs results may influence secondary school placement. Schools may use these results, along with other criteria, to determine appropriate sets or classes for your child.
